Rural Oklahoma Birth & Wellness Initiative
Community-led care for rural Oklahoma families
Who We Are
Our work is rooted in the understanding that support during the perinatal and early parenting years is not one-size-fits-all. Rural communities face unique barriers, including limited access to healthcare, transportation challenges, and fewer local resources. At the same time, these communities hold deep strengths, resilience, and knowledge. ROBWI was created to honor both the challenges and the strengths present in rural Oklahoma.
We take a relationship-centered, trauma-informed approach to everything we do. This means we prioritize trust, dignity, cultural humility, and continuity of care. Whether we are connecting families to doulas, hosting community events, supporting parents and caregivers, or training the perinatal workforce, our focus remains the same: meeting people where they are and responding to real community needs.
ROBWI supports families directly through community-based programs and events, while also investing in the training, mentorship, and professional development of doulas and providers. By strengthening both families and the workforce that serves them, we work toward more connected, responsive systems of care.
At our core, ROBWI believes that families thrive when they are supported, informed, and connected to one another. Our work is guided by collaboration, lived experience, and a commitment to building healthier communities from pregnancy through early childhood.
What We Do
Rural Oklahoma Birth & Wellness Initiative (ROBWI) supports families across pregnancy, postpartum, and early childhood by strengthening both direct community support and the workforce that provides it. Our work is relationship-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in the realities of rural communities.
We offer family and community support that helps reduce isolation and increase access to care. This includes connecting families to trained doulas, providing mentorship and peer support, helping families navigate services and systems, coordinating care across providers, and redistributing essential items to families in need. Through community-based events, we bring education, resources, and connection directly into local spaces.
Alongside family support, ROBWI invests in training, mentorship, and professional development for doulas, providers, and students committed to serving rural communities. Our programs focus on ethical practice, sustainability, and real-world application, helping build a skilled, supported workforce that can offer consistent, high-quality care over time.
Together, these efforts strengthen families, support providers, and build more connected systems of care so families are not navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or early childhood alone.
Who We Serve
ROBWI serves pregnant people, parents, caregivers, and families navigating pregnancy, postpartum, and early childhood in rural and underserved communities. We support individuals who may feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn, as well as those seeking connection, education, and community-centered care. Our work is designed for families, parents, and caregivers facing barriers to access, including geographic isolation, limited local resources, and systemic challenges, while honoring the strengths, resilience, and lived experience present in rural communities.
We also serve doulas, providers, students, and community partners who are committed to supporting parents, caregivers, and families with compassion, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice. By working alongside both families and the workforce that serves them, ROBWI helps build stronger connections, increase access to support, and foster more responsive systems of care rooted in community.
How We Show Up
ROBWI shows up with intention, humility, and deep respect for the lived experiences of the families and communities we serve. Our work is grounded in relationship-centered, trauma-informed practices that prioritize trust, dignity, and safety. We believe meaningful support begins by listening, honoring context, and meeting people where they are without judgment or assumptions.
We show up consistently and collaboratively, working alongside families, community members, and partners rather than operating above or apart from them. Our programs and events are designed to be accessible, welcoming, and responsive, recognizing both the unique strengths of rural communities and the real barriers to care they face. Cultural humility, shared learning, and flexibility guide how support is offered and how programs take shape.
Across all areas of our work, we show up with care for both families and the workforce that supports them. We prioritize continuity, ethical practice, and sustainability, knowing that long-term impact requires strong relationships, supported providers, and systems built on connection rather than crisis response. We also approach our work with an understanding of the historical and ongoing trauma that shapes rural Oklahoma communities, including the lasting impacts of Indigenous displacement. By listening first and centering lived experience, ROBWI builds trust, respects community knowledge, and supports healing.
Above all, ROBWI shows up committed to strengthening community and ensuring families feel seen, supported, and not alone.
